What happens on stage stays on stage, until now. For theater kids everywhere, Broadway itself delivers the latest dose of drama, and yes, it once again revolves around Lea Michele.

After a month of speculation, Lea, who is said to be illiterate, has just been announced as Beanie Feldstein’s replacement as the lead in Broadway’s Funny Girl. Playing Fanny Brice, she will not only take on the lead role of Beanie, but follow in the footsteps of the legendary Barbra Streisand in 1964.

Announcing he was leaving production, Beanie shared that he would be marching with his band and not beating his drum anymore because the producers are taking the show in a “different direction,” maybe a new direction a la Glee?

Lea Michele replaces Beanie Feldstein in ‘Funny Girl’

The world of musical theater, the entertainment industry and Glee fans are coming together to talk big news this week, and it has a lot to do with Beanie Feldstein, Lea Michele and the revival of Funny Girl.

Funny Girl is one of the most iconic musicals of all time, having debuted on Broadway in 1964 and starring Barbra Streisand. The semi-biographical plot is based on the life and career of Broadway star, film actress and comedian Fanny Brice, with hit musicals such as “Don’t Rain On My Parade”.

It was the musical that catapulted Streisand to fame, and she also played Fanny Brice in the 1968 film adaptation, for which she won the Best Actress Oscar.

It has been considered the role of a lifetime for many triple threats.

So, in 2021, when it was announced that a revival of the musical was in the works, you can imagine the great excitement not only of musical theater fans, but also of the actors.

Lea Michele’s name was immediately mentioned, as the American actor and singer has been incredibly vocal about her idolization of Streisand and the role of Fanny Brice.

But with too many skeletons in his closet, possibly shutting out that opportunity, the role went to Beanie Feldstein. So this week, when it was announced that Feldstein was leaving the show, to be replaced by Michele, everyone started talking.

Lea Michele has been tapped to step in and direct the Broadway revival of the beleaguered Funny Girl.

The announcement came just hours after current star Beanie Feldstein revealed he was leaving the musical earlier than expected as the show was headed in a “different direction”.

The high-profile cast change represents another step towards Michele’s return to the limelight and respectability after former Glee 2020 castmates accused the actor of racist behavior and bullying.

Michele, who started her career on Broadway and starred in the first Spring Awakening, recently returned to work with the documentary Spring Awakening: Those You’ve Known.
